Thank you for being an important part of this crucial work

Ending map manipulation has a profound impact on our society. There's a ton of work ahead, but for today — a simple "thank you."

Pamela,

End-of-month deadlines can be a lot. Thank you so much for supporting AOTL through it all. We will have other deadlines and goals, but I realized we only have two more "end-of-months" together before the November election. Whoa.

Our offices were closed on Monday in observance of Labor Day — our national holiday created to honor and celebrate the contributions of workers and labor unions across the country.

In my home state of Michigan, this was the first Labor Day since the 2023 repeal of its anti-union "right-to-work" legislation. Despite some good branding and communications work, it's becoming more widely known that "right-to-work" laws hurt workers — they actually result in lower wages and benefits.

As someone who thinks all workers should have access to decent wages and job security, I was proud when Michigan recently became the first state in 58 years (!!!) to repeal its right-to-work laws.

And I could connect the dots between the historic progress Michigan is making for workers and the work we're doing here together at AOTL for fair maps.

For years, Michigan had notoriously been home to some of the most gerrymandered political maps in the country. Democrats were winning the majority of votes but Republicans were still winning majorities in the legislature.

In 2018, Michigan voters, tired of not being fairly represented, passed a ballot initiative to move the redistricting process from the legislature to an independent commission.

And in 2022, the very first election that leveraged new maps from the independent commission, Democrats won a majority for the first time in 40 years. And that progressive majority was able to repeal the right-to-work laws that had been hurting Michigan families for decades.

So, Pamela, you helped make that happen!

And it's not just Michigan. With your support, we're hard at work across the country making sure the actions of our government reflect the will of the people. That includes undoing gerrymanders, enacting redistricting reforms like independent commissions, and mobilizing voters ahead of November.

Ending map manipulation has a profound impact on our society. There's a ton of work ahead but for today, just a simple "thank you."
