Strategy memo: Our plan to restore abortion rights and defeat Trump

Donald Trump just gave the whole game away. Last week, Trump—who is registered to vote in Florida—announced that in November he will vote to uphold the state's draconian and deadly six-week abortion ban, which outlaws abortion before most people even know they're pregnant.¹

Before this announcement, Trump was, absurdly, claiming that his administration would be "great for women and their reproductive rights," and dodging questions about vetoing a federal abortion ban.² But we know the truth: If Donald Trump is elected, he will ban abortion nationwide, with or without Congress.

Thanks to Trump's nominees to the Supreme Court, tens of millions of people have already lost the right to abortion, even in cases where their lives or health are at risk.

That's why MoveOn is going all-in to make sure key voters in battleground states know exactly what Trump will do in office by broadcasting an ad that is proven to be incredibly effective at persuading voters. We're also putting boots on the ground supporting ballot measures in three states—Arizona, Nevada, and, yes, Florida—that, if passed, would protect abortion rights in those states and help propel Democrats to victory up and down the ballot.

Our election program has been laser-focused on turning out what we call "surge voters," voters who tend to be younger and lean democratic but may not turn out to vote without an additional push.

Our analytics team just ran the numbers and found that across Arizona, Florida, and Nevada alone, there are 936,292 surge voters we have contact information for, meaning that MoveOn volunteers can reach out to them through the mail, via text message, over the phone, and even in person.

Just look at Arizona, a key swing state for both the presidential election and the Senate. We have identified 164,674 surge voters we can contact across the state. President Biden won Arizona by just 10,457 votes in 2020.³ If we can turn out just a fraction of our surge voters, we will not only restore abortion rights in the state but ensure that Kamala Harris wins there as well.
