Article V Day

This week, the extremist group trying to let unelected, unaccountable delegates write their far-right-wing agenda into our Constitution celebrated what they're calling "Article V Day." I'll be blunt, Pamela: This "celebration" has nothing to do with our country or our values. Those who want to move an Article V Convention talk about shredding First Amendment protection, gutting environmental regulation, rolling back civil rights advances, and enshrining far-right economics as permanent fiscal policy – which will gut Medicare, Medicaid, and other safety-net programs. And the worst part? Just six states stand between us and a disastrous Article V Constitutional Convention – an event unprecedented in U.S. history that could mean major constitutional chaos. Pamela, we have no choice but to step up our grassroots response to defeat this effort. We're tracking scores of bills in the state legislatures and mobilizing our team in response to state-by-state fights that will determine whether our opponents will succeed in undermining our democratic process. That's why I'm rushing this alert to you and every Common Cause member. With your help, we've stopped dozens of new calls for a convention each year in states across the country. And we're playing offense too! We've successfully rescinded existing convention calls in New Jersey, Illinois, Colorado, New Hampshire, Delaware, New Mexico, Maryland, and Nevada – meaning that if Common Cause hadn't acted, we'd be just one or two states from going off the Article V cliff! I don't need to tell you that the right-wing extremists and billionaire donors behind this effort are feeling more emboldened than ever right now... which means you and I must redouble our efforts and prepare to defend in multiple states next year.
