Every day, incarcerated people fight fires, clean toilets, sew uniforms, serve food, and clear asbestos for pennies an hour or no pay at all: 64 percent of people working behind bars say that they fear for their safety, and 70 percent say they have not received formal training.
But change is possible, Pamela. This November, Nevadans will vote on a state constitutional amendment that could make Nevada the eighth state to end the exception. Meanwhile, advocates in Kentucky, Michigan, and New York are advancing similar legislation to end forced prison labor in their states.
To protect the rights, safety, and dignity of incarcerated people nationwide, we need YOU. Let's keep our work going for every person who is being exploited by a cruel and racist system that prioritizes profits and punishment over people.
Please don't wait to make your MATCHED gift. Give today and your impact will go twice as far. Lives and livelihoods are at stake, and we urgently need your support. In solidarity, Vera Institute of Justice |
