Pamela,
Let's face it. The Supreme Court's anti-democracy rulings and ethics scandals have shattered the public's trust in our system of justice. But what if I told you that the Court's shameful actions recently were actually years in the making?
That's right. The scandal-ridden majority on the court that now controls every aspect of your life is part of a frightening long-term strategy to redesign American life. At the center of it all are two men named Harlan Crow and Leonard Leo.
Do you want to know more about what's really going on with the Supreme Court? Take our quiz to test your knowledge and find out what you can do to fight back.
Leonard Leo has spent decades shaping the judiciary, raising billions of dark money dollars to influence judicial confirmations and elections. He courts potential future judges right out of college, setting them up for lifetime appointments so they can decide everything from gun safety laws to environmental protections and our right to vote, to align with his view of what the country should be.
Leo played a key role in selecting Justices Clarence Thomas, John Roberts, Samuel Alito, Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh, and Amy Coney Barrett.
Crow, meanwhile, is the billionaire who keeps Justice Clarence Thomas and his wife, ultra-conservative operative Ginni Thomas, happy with yacht trips, private jets, and luxury vacations. He even bought a house for Justice Thomas' mother and paid tuition for his grandnephew! [1]
Here's the problem, Pamela: As long as Supreme Court justices aren't held to the same code of conduct as ALL other federal judges, there's nothing stopping megadonors like Leo and Crow from buying influence, at your expense and mine.
Clearly, the court is facing a well-deserved crisis of confidence.
But we can fix it, Pamela. Common Cause is working to expose this corruption and hold the Supreme Court accountable.
That's why, alongside members like you, we're pressuring Congress to pass the High Court Gift Ban Act, which would stop justices from receiving any gift worth more than $50. And, we're supporting the Supreme Court Ethics, Recusal, and Transparency Act to establish an enforceable code of conduct – one that holds the Court accountable to the same standards every other federal judge is held to.
But none of this is possible without your support. Take our quiz on the Supreme Court's corruption and learn how you can help restore integrity to our nation's highest court.
Together, we can demand a fair and transparent court that serves the people, not the powerful.
