Today is Earth Day, and this year's celebration could not come at a more critical moment for the future of our planet.
The United Nations released its latest report on climate change earlier this month, and the findings are stark: Unless greenhouse gas emissions fall at rates faster than most countries have committed to, we are "firmly on track toward an unlivable world."1
The report was not without hope, however, with scientists listing the ways that governments can immediately begin to more deeply cut emissions, such as rapidly shifting to renewable energy, investing in the electrification of transportation, and supporting poorer nations to adopt similar policies.2
We know what to do to save our planet and, in turn, the future for our children and grandchildren, and we need to call on our leaders to act NOW.
If our leaders do not act now, no person on Earth will be spared the catastrophic consequences of the climate crisis, and the most devastating impacts will hit poorer countries, as well as marginalized communities in the United States and other wealthy nations.
