| Pamela, Senator Joe Manchin made waves this week when he declared that he would only support voter protection laws that have support from Republicans―meaning the For the People Act, which would protect voters against the state-level voter suppression laws that Republicans are passing on party lines in Texas, Georgia, Arizona, Florida and more. Here's the problem with Sen. Manchin's argument: Every poll that's been conducted shows that the provisions of the For the People Act *are* popular, even with Republicans and independents. Look at what our friends at Data for Progress found: The problem is that Republican politicians have embraced obstruction as their raison d'etre. If the President is for it, they're going to be against it. That means that hitching democracy reform to the party that's actively trying to dismantle it is never going to work. Joe Manchin has a choice: Does he want to be the one who destroys Joe Biden's presidency? Or does he want to be the one who saved American democracy? Sign now if you think Joe Manchin should care more about American democracy than getting Mitch McConnell's support. Thanks, Mike Phelan Progress America P.S. Fun fact: Before Joe Biden, we'd NEVER had a President named Joe. So if for no other reason, Joe Manchin should show a little solidarity. |
