The climate crisis is increasing the frequency and severity of extreme weather events across the globe, including floods, droughts, wildfires and cyclones. Here in the United States, we’re currently in the middle of hurricane season.
Just last year, Hurricane Ian killed more than 150 people and caused extreme flooding and destruction in Florida and the Carolinas. In 2021, Hurricane Ida struck Louisiana on the 16th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, causing significant damage along the Gulf Coast before continuing north.
As these devastating storms become more and more common, our work to help communities around the world prepare for and respond to disaster is more important than ever. Thanks to the support of our Leadership Circle partners, Save the Children emergency response teams have been at the forefront of meeting children’s needs in every U.S. disaster since Hurricane Katrina in 2005 – and many more around the globe.
With your support, we’re able to take action before disasters strike, prepositioning supplies, spreading awareness and ensuring children and families have the support they need. Together, we’ve created more safe spaces for children in emergencies than any other humanitarian organization. Your support also helps children access basic necessities and emergency shelter, continue their education in the face of great adversity and get mental health support to recover from traumatic events.
Of course, responding to emergencies is only part of what your support can help make possible. Our teams are also working to bring lifesaving vaccines and medical care to children in some of the world’s most rural communities. They’re building wells to help children access clean water and ensuring they get the education they need to build the brighter futures they deserve.
Thank you for making all this – and more – possible and creating change that lasts a lifetime for the children who need it most.
