Did you know Kentucky is where Save the Children’s work in the United States first began?
Our engagement in the region meant we were well-positioned to respond at this time last year when devastating floods killed 44 people and displaced thousands more across eastern Kentucky. Our Kentucky-based emergency response teams pre-positioned supplies and mobilized in the immediate aftermath of this disaster to deliver hygiene kits, diapers, water and cleaning supplies to families who had lost everything.
We were also in constant communication with schools and early learning partners across the region to assess the damage and work to get child care centers back up and running as soon as possible. This was essential to mitigate the long-term threat to children’s futures – giving kids a place where they can resume a routine is a key part of recovery after a traumatic event.
One year on, communities in Kentucky are still recovering and will be for a long time. National media coverage of the devastation has long moved on, but our teams remain, working to ensure children’s needs are met and their futures are bright.
