Dear MoveOn member,
Thank you so much for joining us for yesterday's exclusive screening of "Racially Charged: America's Misdemeanor Problem."
"Racially Charged" isn't an easy documentary to watch. But its history and stories are absolutely crucial if we want to continue the work of dismantling our racist criminal legal system.
Now, we need to turn our emotion and anger into action—and we have a few different ways to get involved.
- Start a petition to your local district attorney or county attorney here. Since so much of our criminal legal system is enforced at the county or community level, it's critical that we mobilize locally. By starting a petition in your community, you can help build support for a demand or campaign that's specific and relevant to your community. If you need an idea, we have a sample, pre-filled petition that you can use to call for the end of cash bail. For more information, check out the link above—and you can click here for some tips on how to run a successful petition campaign!
- Host a house party screening of "Racially Charged." Brave New Films, which is the organization that produced the documentary, has a handful of resources to help make your screening a success, including discussion questions and other guidance.
- Learn more about the People's Response Act, which is a transformative piece of legislation sponsored by Representatives Cori Bush and Ayanna Pressley. This bill would overhaul the criminal legal system as we know it and provide many community alternatives to overpolicing and over-incarceration. MoveOn is one of the organizations that has endorsed it, so be sure to stay on the lookout for more information on how we're going to continue building support for it in the coming weeks.
Thanks for all you do.
