Tell Election Officials and Journalists: Trump and his team may try to demand results on Election Night anyway to confuse and silence voters. You must demonstrate restraint and wait until they have the right election results before reporting a winner―even if it means we don't know who won on Election Night. | Friend, Tomorrow night, we'll be watching the election results come in…. And we may be watching for a long time. Because of the pandemic, more Americans than ever will be voting by mail and early, but Republican state legislatures have refused to make accommodations that could speed the counting of those mail ballots―in some cases going so far as to prevent state boards of election from even opening the envelopes those ballots arrive in before the polls close.1 Yet last week, Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh started singing from Trump's hymnal, all but saying that ballots counted after November 3rd should be considered fraudulent.2 This is a public information campaign―one our democracy can't afford to lose. SIGN NOW: Tell Election officials and Journalists to put the brakes on attempts to rush the calls on election night. We must count every vote! Journalists and election officials cannot let Trump and his allies pressure them into reporting incomplete or partial results on Election Night―at the expense of everyday Americans' rights and the integrity of our democracy. Every ballot will be counted this election, according to the law -- and no matter what Trump says or does, no one can declare themselves the president. That decision is to be made by the American people. But we have seen before the power that the media has to determine the legitimacy of elections: - In 2000, Fox News' decision to call Florida for George W. Bush set in motion a deadly chain of events that led to Bush v. Gore deciding to stop counting votes and declare him the winner.3 (Then, under Bush's leadership, 9/11, the Iraq War, Katrina, and the Great Recession all claimed American lives.)
- In 2012, Karl Rove walked back into the Fox News decision desk, desperate to understand how Barack Obama could have won Ohio, and re-election.4
The country is depending on the media to stand up to Republicans who try to stop vote counting―your voice matters! Tell the Media: Do your jobs, and make sure that every vote is counted, rather than caving to pressure from Republicans to call the race before it's been counted!
