Tell Congress: "Insulin manufacturers could lower the price of insulin at any time. Scientists who discovered insulin sold their patent for $1. Millions of Americans cannot afford their insulin. Now, Donald Trump is giving a pass to drug companies to keep charging sky-high prices for insulin to most Americans. Because NO ONE should ever struggle to afford their insulin, it's time for the government to step in and save lives." | Donald Trump is putting a fig leaf on the greed of insulin manufacturers. Canadian researchers sold the original patent to insulin for $1.1 But the reprehensible greed of drug companies has meant the price diabetics pay has increased exponentially over the years. Millions of Americans struggle to afford insulin. Many cannot pay. Some die. This week, President Trump announced an agreement with drug manufacturers, which limits some costs, but which protects their ability to massively overcharge for insulin most of the time.2 Tell Congress: We can't afford to let drug companies save face while they continue exploiting patients. Trump promises that seniors with diabetes who use Medicare can pay less for insulin, but even that limited step contains fine print. Even Trump's own appointee, head of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Seema Verma, admits plans that offer the insulin caps will have more expensive premiums, costing about $17 more per month. This agreement is propaganda, pure and simple. It's not enough to give a few patients a measured amount of relief, and then move back to a status quo where people die without the insulin they need. Here's the solution: The U.S. government should commit to begin public production of insulin. Now is the time to unrig the generic market. Now is the time to increase competition. Now is the time to save lives by putting insulin within reach for millions of Americans. There's no reason patients should EVER struggle to afford insulin. Patients need more than promises from drug companies and Donald Trump. It's time for the U.S. government to begin public production of insulin. Tell Congress: Every single American who needs insulin should have insulin. Today!
