Friends -
I am writing to you today to ask you to support our legislation to provide emergency monthly payments of $2,000 to all working people, and to tell Mitch McConnell to include it in the next relief bill.
Let me be very clear:
A single check of $1,200 is not nearly enough. In many places, that may only be enough to cover one month's rent. More than 36 million people have filed for unemployment and millions more are going hungry, getting evicted, losing their homes, and having trouble paying off their credit card bills.
This unprecedented crisis demands an unprecedented legislative response.
During this crisis, Congress must make sure that every working-class household receives a $2,000 monthly payment for each family member.
If we can bail out large corporations, we can ensure that everyone in this country has the income to support themselves and afford basic necessities.
That is why I am asking you today:
Here is what the bill would do:
- Provide a monthly $2,000 check to every person with an annual income below $120,000 for as long as this pandemic lasts and for three months after it ends.
- Married couples who file jointly would receive $4,000 and parents would receive $2,000 per child for up to three children.
- Ensure that every U.S. resident receives a payment, regardless of whether or not they have filed a recent tax return or have a Social Security number.
- Forbid debt collectors from seizing the payments.
- Make payments retroactive to March when this crisis began.
In my view, the coronavirus relief legislation recently released by Democrats in the House does not provide substantial support for working families. One additional $1,200 check is not enough to survive when tens of millions have lost their jobs and are struggling to support themselves.
One of the best ways to support working people who are feeling the economic impact of this crisis is to ensure they continue to have reliable income to afford the basic necessities they need.
That is what our legislation is designed to do, and today I am asking for your support:
Thank you for adding your name today.
In solidarity,
Bernie Sanders
