Friends -
Today, I am very proud to share with you some extraordinary news: during the month of February alone, our campaign raised more than $46.5 million from more than 2.2 million individual donations — for an average donation of about $21.
This is a campaign FOR the working people of this country powered BY the working people of this country.
While other campaigns have their super PACs and their billionaire donors, or are billionaires themselves, we have something they do not have — and that is people. Lots and lots of people.
Now before I share a bit more about our record-breaking, small-dollar fundraising, I need to ask you to do something very important — something that will help our campaign tremendously as we prepare for Super Tuesday and the states that follow:
I know we sent a number of fundraising emails, so I thought it important to share a few more details about the PEOPLE who are powering our grassroots movement:
- More than 350,000 people made their first contribution to our campaign in the month of February.
- Once again, the most common occupation of a donor to our campaign is teachers and the most common employers were Amazon, Starbucks, Walmart, USPS, and Target workers in that order.
- More than 56% of our donors in February were under the age of 40.
- More than 99% of our donations were for $100 or less.
- And we received more than 1.4 million donations from people who vote on Super Tuesday.
For too long, the political and economic systems of this country have been stacked against ordinary Americans. The rich get richer because they use their wealth to buy elections — something they are trying to do in this primary.
But what we are proving on this campaign is that one does not need to beg the wealthy and the powerful for campaign contributions to win elections.
We are proving that we are far more powerful than the 1 percent have ever imagined.
And that is important, because in order to beat Trump, we're going to need a campaign of energy and enthusiasm in November.
We need a nominee with an agenda that mobilizes millions of Americans behind ideas like Medicare for All, raising the minimum wage, and leading the world in combating climate change.
That is our campaign.
You have put us in a position to win. Now we need to get out the vote. So I am asking:
Now these numbers will no doubt put a target on our back. And you can assume that the billionaire class and a number of super PACs will see them and only redouble their efforts to defeat us.
They can raise money millions of dollars at a time. We raise ours $5, $10, and $27 at a time.
Now that might seem like a mismatch — and it is. Because when millions of people come together and chip in what they can, when they can, we are not only going to win this nomination, but we are going to beat Trump and transform this country.
Thank you.
Let's do it again in March. Let's win on Super Tuesday. And let us go forward together and win this nomination.
In solidarity,
Bernie Sanders
