A U.S. citizen was killed by Israeli settlers in the West Bank last week, Pamela:
Sayfollah "Saif" Musallet, a 20-year-old from Florida, was visiting family when violent settlers beat him and prevented an ambulance from reaching him. He is now the fifth American to be killed in the West Bank since October 2023.[1]
Saif's death is part of a devastating and extremely concerning pattern of violence and impunity. Calls for the Israeli government to investigate are growing, but the simple truth is that the same Israeli government that has been sanctioned for inciting violence against Palestinians in the West Bank cannot be trusted to investigate itself in yet another tragedy.
At a minimum, the U.S. government owes it to Musallet's family and Americans everywhere to seek accountability for his killing and help end the alarming rise in settler violence in the West Bank. A key step is a U.S.-led investigation. Pressure from Congress can help secure one — but that will only come if we, the people, speak up to demand justice.
| ACT NOW |
Turning a blind eye to this rise in settler violence won't help bring the hostages home. It won't help stop the Israeli military's bombs. It won't mitigate the hunger crisis in Gaza. One thing it will guarantee? More lives in danger across Palestine and Israel.
But pressure is mounting, Pamela. Even Mike Huckabee, Trump's dangerous, extremist Ambassador to Israel, characterized Musallet's killing as a "criminal and terrorist act" and called on Israeli authorities to investigate.[2]
Strong words like these won't be enough. If we want accountability and justice, we've got to demand the truth, but it's less likely to be uncovered when the investigators are the same Netanyahu government that includes far-right ministers like Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich. Those two have been accused of inciting extremist violence and serious abuses of Palestinian human rights — and have so far allowed perpetrators to dodge accountability for the prior killings of U.S. citizens in Palestine, including student activist Ayşenur Eygi and journalist Shireen Abu Akleh.[3]
A U.S. government investigation into Saif's killing can build the kind of accountability that helps end settler violence across the West Bank. And as Trump appointees like Huckabee speak out, this is the moment to push his administration to go further. If we can drive Congress to put bipartisan pressure on the Trump administration, they'll have no choice but to launch an investigation.
