Call your representative now to demand they oppose the Laken Riley Act: 855-980-2326.
Dear MoveOn member,
Tomorrow, the House is expected to vote on the Laken Riley Act, a Trump-backed bill that undermines constitutional protections and due process rights under the guise of public safety. This legislation is a blatant attempt to exploit a tragic loss of life by scapegoating immigrants to further polarize America.
Under the Laken Riley Act, immigrants who are merely accused of crimes without due process could face mandatory incarceration—potentially for years—without a formal judgement from a trial.1 Even children would be subject to mandatory incarceration.2
You can say something like this:
"Hi! My name is [first name] and I'm calling to urge the senator to vote no on the Laken Riley Act. I oppose the legislation because it scapegoats immigrants and stripping the right to due process hurts us all. Thank you."
The Department of Homeland Security already has the authority to detain immigrants convicted of crimes. However, the Laken Riley Act seeks to drastically expand this power by permitting the detention of individuals merely accused—rather than convicted—of crimes, while also stripping them of constitutionally protected due process rights, such as the fundamental right to a hearing. Clearly, this bill is another Republican-led effort to dehumanize immigrants by conflating the presence of immigrants with decreased public safety.
Democrats in Congress shouldn't fall for fearmongering tactics that manipulate tragedy to demonize entire groups of people. Americans want humane, commonsense immigration policies that protect both our communities and those migrating to our country, while expecting Democrats to not concede to these anti-immigrant ploys.
Trump just took office, and his right-wing agenda is already sabotaging constitutional protections. Together, we can urge Democrats in Congress to decisively reject this unconstitutional, anti-immigrant legislation and push Congress to prioritize genuine, effective solutions to our broken immigration system.
Thanks for all you do.
