An insurrectionist as House speaker?

Andra, we cannot allow an insurrectionist to run the House.

Dear MoveOn member,

We have to stop MAGA Republican Jim Jordan of Ohio from becoming the next House speaker, Andra.

For 11 days now, the House has been ground to a halt, with no speaker in charge, because Republicans are unable to govern.

On Thursday, Louisiana Representative Steve Scalise, the current House majority leader, pulled out of the race for speaker—in part because of his history of aligning himself with KKK leader David Duke.1

That leaves Ohio's Representative Jim Jordan, who helped Donald Trump plan the deadly January 6 insurrection to end American democracy as we know it.2

Of course, Trump immediately endorsed Jordan for speaker, saying, "Congressman Jim Jordan has been a STAR long before making his very successful journey to Washington, D.C. He will be a GREAT Speaker of the House, & has my Complete & Total Endorsement!"3

If Jordan wins the race for House speaker, the House will truly be in the hands of Trump and MAGA Republicans. We cannot let that happen.

Can you chip in $5 a month to help us ramp up the pressure on the 18 most vulnerable Republicans in the House to publicly oppose Jordan as House speaker? These are Republicans who represent districts that President Joe Biden won in 2020—meaning they are walking on a political tightrope and surely cannot allow an insurrectionist to run the House. We'll keep the pressure up for as long as it takes to defeat MAGA Republicans.

Yes, I'll chip in monthly.

No, I'm sorry, I can't make a monthly donation.

As Mother Jones reported this week, Jordan "does differ from his GOP colleagues in an important way: his unique role in helping Trump try to steal the 2020 election and launch the January 6 riot."4

White House records show that Trump spoke with Jordan on the phone for 10 minutes on January 6, right before Trump spoke to thousands of his supporters gathered at the Ellipse and told them, "We fight like hell, and if you don't fight like hell, you're not going to have a country anymore."5,6

The afternoon of January 6, after Trump supporters attacked the U.S. Capitol, Republican Liz Cheney told Jordan to get away from her, saying, "You f*ck*ng did this!"7

In a speech last week, Cheney, who co-chaired the House committee that investigated the January 6 insurrection, warned, "Jim Jordan knew more about what Donald Trump had planned for January 6 than any other member of the House of Representatives."8

Andra, we cannot allow an insurrectionist to run the House. Please chip in $5 a month to help us ramp up pressure on the 18 vulnerable Republicans who represent blue districts to oppose Jordan and keep the pressure up for as long as it takes to defeat MAGA Republicans.

Yes, I'll chip in monthly.

No, I'm sorry, I can't make a monthly donation.

Remember, the Republicans control Congress by the narrowest of margins, so if just a few of these 18 Republicans don't support Jordan, he won't be elected.

Thanks for all you do.

Want to support MoveOn's work? Book bans have skyrocketed thanks to right-wing state laws which have forced teachers to remove books from their classrooms. In response, MoveOn is launching a "Banned Bookmobile," filling it with books that the far right has banned, and driving it around to hand out those books, for free, in highly trafficked areas that will attract media attention. To keep the Banned Bookmobile up and running into 2024, we need your help.
