[LETTER ALERT] The scariest thing coming up in our fight to fully fund the government

Take 2 minutes to send a letter to protect essential government programs from budget cuts in the fight ahead.

Dear MoveOn member,

It's a pretty spooky time on Capitol Hill right now. Yet again, so-called "moderates" within the Republican Party bent to the will of MAGA extremists in their party and selected and voted unanimously for Representative Mike Johnson to be the new speaker of the House.Johnson's own voting record is, as one might expect, notably abysmal: He wants to ban abortion, contraception, gay and interracial marriage, and opposes the Violence Against Women Act.2 Honestly, we could go on and on, but now that Johnson is speaker, he'll use his newfound power to whittle down every single program we fought for in the debt ceiling fight earlier this year.

The fight to get a fully funded plan for the government is far from over. Will you take two minutes out of your day to send a letter to your member of Congress and demand they vote against cuts to essential programs?

We're not just shining a light on Johnson's character and his votes—but we need to mobilize MoveOn members like you to take action against the extremism that Johnson and Republicans are trying to enact to completely erode our most essential domestic programs. Nothing is scarier than drastic cuts for pivotal programs like the Special Supplemental Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) and cuts for crucial departments like the Department of Education. Take action by sending your representative a letter right now to fight back.

Johnson wants to create a so-called "bipartisan" commission on the national debt, but Republicans never want to invest in our communities.3 In fact, the MAGA plan is just the opposite, and slashing these programs will impact working people the hardest.4 Johnson himself already has a history of voting to raise the eligibility ages for Social Security and Medicare, increase Medicare premiums and extend Trump-era tax cuts for corporations and the ultra-wealthy.5 Take action by sending your representative a letter right now to make our demands clear. Our representatives need to hear directly from their constituents, and you can send a quick letter in just a couple of minutes.

Thanks for all you do.

Want to support MoveOn's work? Book bans have skyrocketed thanks to right-wing state laws which have forced teachers to remove books from their classrooms. In response, MoveOn is launching a "Banned Bookmobile," filling it with books that the far right has banned, and driving it around to hand out those books, for free, in highly trafficked areas that will attract media attention. To keep the Banned Bookmobile up and running into 2024, we need your help.
