In a free society, all people need to have the ability to determine their future and what happens to their own body.
All people need access to free, comprehensive, and culturally literate health care, including abortion—no matter their race, age, or financial status.
Republican politicians don't get to decide our futures. We do.
The Supreme Court's new term begins on Tuesday, and on December 1 the high court will hear arguments on a Mississippi abortion ban that could end the right to safe and legal abortion across the United States.4
Democrats in the House of Representatives are not waiting for the Trump Supreme Court. Last week, the House passed the Women's Health Protection Act to codify Roe v. Wade in federal law.5
Now we must press the Senate to do the same—and that means doing away with the filibuster so a minority of Republicans in the Senate can't block millions of people from accessing abortions and other critical health care. And we need to push the White House to expand and rebalance the Supreme Court in the aftermath of McConnell and Trump's power grabs, so we can restore a high court that will protect our rights and regain the trust of the American people.
We can do it, together, Andra. And we must. Already in Texas, people with low incomes are being forced to carry unwanted pregnancies to term due to its shameful, stigmatizing abortion ban that especially harms Black women and other people of color. Meanwhile, people with resources—largely white, wealthy women—can travel out of state or to Mexico for abortions.
