| Tell Congress: "We demand that you pass a $15 minimum wage immediately!" | Republican governors are cutting off unemployment benefits in their states out of a false, cruel belief that doing so will fill vacant positions. That's not how it actually works. The US can't "bounce back" from the pandemic without addressing decades of income inequality in this country. A real recovery starts with a higher minimum wage. Nobody wants to work for poverty wages. Toxic employers like fast food chains are panicking over low jobs numbers. But they're (willfully) ignoring a common sense truth: poverty wage jobs aren't worth returning to. Sign the petition: Tell Congress to pass a $15 minimum wage now! Right-wing extremists like Tucker Carlson would have you believe that millions of low-income workers are sitting back collecting government checks instead getting jobs. So much so that the Republican governors of Montana, South Carolina, and Arkansas are cutting unemployment benefits to force low-wage earners back into the job market. When you factor in transportation costs, family and childcare costs, healthcare costs, and risks of exposure as vaccination rates fall, some low-wage jobs are too expensive and dangerous to return to. Of course this was true before, but the pandemic brought decades of income inequality into harsh focus. The best way to fill open positions is to pay workers well. And that also helps address our country's staggering inequality. One first step is raising the minimum wage to $15. Unfortunately, Republicans and even some Democrats, like Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema, are against raising the minimum wage to $15. But that's where you come in. Your voice matters, and if members of Congress continue to hear a drumbeat demanding a $15 minimum wage, they'll have a harder time refusing. Sign the petition: Tell Congress to pass a $15 minimum wage now! Thanks, Team Progress |
