Our movement scored a huge win when Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Chair Gary Gensler's pick to serve as the agency's enforcement director resigned after we sounded the alarm on her role in an Indonesian torture case. Alex Oh, had a long history working for a big law firm where her clients included fossil fuel giant Exxonmobil. When they allegedly paid the Indonesian military to murder and torture civilians to protect their natural gas facilities, Alex Oh defended them in court. While Oh's resignation is a massive victory against corporate power, our work is not done. Just last week it was reported that while Oh's resignation came as a surprise, it was "unlikely to dissuade Chairman Gary Gensler from looking to BigLaw for a replacement." We need Oh's replacement to be a strong public advocate -- not a buddy of Wall Street. Will you add your name to the petition? Prior to joining the SEC, Alex Oh worked for two decades at a Big Law firm. She defended ExxonMobil in a class-action lawsuit brought by Indonesian villagers who sought to hold the oil company liable for murder and torture committed by the Indonesian military from 1999 and 2001, when the company hired soldiers to protect its natural gas facilities in the country. And thanks to advocacy from groups like Demand Progress and our friends at Revolving Door Project and the Progressive Change Campaign Committee, Gensler and Oh felt the heat, leading to Oh's resignation. But we cannot rest. We need to step up the pressure to ensure that she isn't replaced by friends of big corporations and Wall Street. We need a team at the SEC who will unapologetically hold Wall Street accountable -- something that is very hard to do if you once worked with the same corporations.
