Alexandria has made herself clear.
We have two options to get working people the sustained relief they need: Override the Senate parliamentarian and raise the wage, or eliminate the filibuster and raise the wage.
To catch you up: Elected officials are currently arguing over paying people enough to live — it's cruel. 27 million people are making $7.25 an hour.
Let's make this clear: $7.25 an hour is a poverty wage.
That's why the House included a federal minimum wage hike to $15 an hour in the COVID-19 package. But now the addition is being blocked by an unelected Senate official, the parliamentarian.
The American people gave the Biden administration a mandate that included passing a $15 federal minimum wage to finally help lift people out of poverty. Now, Biden and Congress have a responsibility to deliver.
The principle is simple: If you are working a full-time job, you should be able to afford to live. If Biden does not act to overrule this decision, he is condoning poverty wages for millions.
But now the White House is signaling that they do not want to override the parlimentarian's decision, or end the filibuster. But the American people voted for substantive change, and that's what Alexandria is fighting for.
That's why Alexandria signed on to Representative Ro Khanna's letter urging President Biden to overrule the parliamentarian and give Americans the wage they were promised.
Alexandria is also pushing Congress to end the filibuster which would require a supermajority vote in the Senate to overrule the parliamentarian.
Thank you,
Team AOC
