| Petition to President Biden: The prison camp at Guantanamo Bay will forever be a stain on the US, but you can end that right now through executive order. We urge to close the Guantanamo Bay prison now! | President Obama outlined a plan to close down the Guantanamo Bay Detention Camp, but Trump froze that plan as soon as he took office. Now President Biden says he wants to close the Guantanamo prison but only after a "robust" review. We already know enough about the tortures and atrocities committed at Guantanamo, and there's already policy plans about how to close it. We don't need a "robust" review, we need an executive order. Sign the petition: Tell President Biden to close the prison at Guantanamo Bay now! The torture and illegal detention at Guantanamo Bay Detention Camp has been long documented. Detainees there, many not even charged with a formal crime, have been subjected to abuse, sleep deprivation, sexual humiliation and religious harassment. Utilizing the murky legal status of "enemy combatants," some detainees who have been cleared for release are still serving time behind bars. Ahmed Rabbani was arrested by the CIA in 2002 after being mistakenly identified as suspected terrorist Hassan Ghul. Two years later the CIA found and arrested the real Hassan Ghul, then released him to Pakistani authorities. He died in a drone strike in 2012, however Ahmed Rabbani is still detained in Guantanamo, where he's been for almost 20 years. A Biden administration "robust" review is not likely to unearth any new information that human rights activists haven't already known for two decades now. President Obama's frozen-in-place closure policy could be reactivated with an executive order from President Biden. The still-living casualties of the "War on Terror" have been waiting for almost twenty years to see their freedom. President Biden needs to act now, not after a lengthy and unnecessary review. Sign the petition: Tell President Biden to close the prison at Guantanamo Bay now! Thanks, Team Progress |
