| Tell the Senate: "It's time to eliminate the filibuster and save American democracy." | Pamela, Republicans are on a voter suppression spree the likes of which we haven't seen since before the Civil Rights movement. They've embraced Trump's Big Lie about election fraud and are out in force, seeking to make sure that the only people who can vote will vote Republican. An Arizona State Representative said the quiet part loud during a debate on his state's voter suppression bill:1 "Democrats value as many people as possible voting, and they're willing to risk fraud. Republicans are more concerned about fraud, so we don't mind putting security measures in that won't let everybody vote—but everybody shouldn't be voting. [...] Quantity is important, but we have to look at the quality of votes, as well." Fortunately, the House of Representatives passed a bill that would firmly establish voting as a right for Americans―the For the People Act. But in a Senate where they could only find 55 votes to impeach a President who sicced a violent mob on those very Senators, the Big Lie is strong enough that overcoming the de facto 60 vote requirement for non-budgetary legislation is impossible. So we're left with a choice that's basically one of those viral Twitter prompts: One must go: American democracy or the Filibuster. American democracy has been slowly expanding since 1776, from white male landowners to women to, finally, people of color. But Republicans are trying to ratchet it back to a time when diverse voices can't be heard. And they're using the filibuster―an accident of history―to do it. Democrats can end the filibuster with a simple majority vote―and then pass whatever laws can get 51 votes. That's how it should be. Elections should have consequences, and the American people should be able to feel those consequences so that they can be properly informed for the next election. ADD YOUR NAME: Tell the Senate to pass the For the People Act, even if it means eliminating the filibuster. This isn't hyperbole: American democracy is on the line.
