Jerise, right now, this administration is working around the clock to get enough support in the Senate for their new voter suppression bill – racing to force through the SAVE America Act before the public can stop them.
The SAVE America Act is being sold as a fix to a problem that doesn't exist. A review of Utah's 2.1 million registered voters found exactly one non-citizen registered – and zero evidence of non-citizen voting. Zero.
What this bill actually does is rig who gets to participate in our democracy, undermining the very soul of our discourse.
Here's who this bill targets & prevents from registering to vote:
-
Over 21 million voting-age citizens don't have ready access to a passport or birth certificate.
-
69 million women have a birth certificate that doesn't match their current legal name – meaning married women could be turned away at the polls.
-
Rural voters in some of the largest counties would face an average 4.5-hour round-trip drive to an election office – nearly eight hours in some places.
-
Native voters could be blocked entirely, since Tribal IDs often lack the specific documentation this bill demands.
Voters with disabilities. Young voters. Survivors of domestic violence who changed their names for safety. People who lost their documents in a hurricane or wildfire.
All of them – silenced. And for what? So that a few elite people can try to control the outcomes of our elections. That's not how our democracy is meant to work.
Time is of the essence. Will you write to your Senator right now and demand that they vote NO on the SAVE America Act?
Jerise, This is an attack on the foundation of democratic life: the idea that every eligible citizen has a voice, and that our government must be accountable to the people it serves.
A democracy where millions are systematically excluded from voting is not a democracy worth the name – and legislation designed to shrink the electorate rather than protect it corrupts the very discourse that self-governance depends on.
We've seen this before. When Kansas passed a similar documentary proof-of-citizenship requirement, more than 31,000 eligible citizens were disenfranchised. The Secretary of State who oversaw that law has personally warned Congress: the Kansas experiment failed.
Senators are under enormous pressure from the White House to vote yes. They need to hear from you before it's too late. Write to your senators today. Demand they vote NO on the SAVE America Act >>
In solidarity,
The Sanders Institute
