Pamela,
In less than a month, Wisconsin will elect a new state supreme court justice. As someone who grew up in the Badger State, the outcome of this race is personal for me.
Let's rewind for a moment so I can explain why.
In 2011, just months after taking office, newly elected conservatives jumped at the chance to manipulate the state's legislative maps.
I spent three weeks sleeping on the cold marble floor in the state capitol building with 100,000 other concerned citizens to protest this and other power grabs they tried to push.
Despite our efforts, anti-democracy forces went forward with their plan. They gutted the state's nonpartisan elections board and enacted a horrifying gerrymander, guaranteeing them an unearned lock on power for a decade.
Our movement was born out of moments like this, Pamela. The core of our work at Redistricting Action is harnessing the power of the people to fight back against extreme legislators to ensure every vote counts and every American has an equal say in our government. In the years since, Attorney General and Redistricting Action Chair Eric Holder has made numerous trips to Wisconsin to mobilize voters and bring national attention to increasingly egregious attempts to subvert the will of the people.
All that work culminated in 2024 when the Wisconsin legislature passed a landmark bill setting forth new fair legislative maps.
Now, as we quickly approach this critical election, we can't turn away from the efforts by anti-democracy extremists to control our courts. In a battleground state like Wisconsin, the stakes of state supreme court elections are even higher because many of the efforts to protect our freedoms could be decided by the court.
Thanks so much,
Jacob
