Pamela,
On May 2nd, Gov. Ron DeSantis and his allies passed HB 1205, a new law that will further restrict the citizen-led amendment process in Florida.
This bill is an attack on direct democracy that will make it harder than ever for Floridians to amend our own state constitution—and some of its harshest provisions go into effect July 1st. That means right now is a critical time to gather signatures for any citizen-led amendment campaigns you care about.
We must refuse to be silenced.
The Legislature and Governor DeSantis want to silence us before we can even speak. But we can show them that we are not backing down and will jump over whatever barriers they put in front of us.
We believe in a Florida where people have the power to shape our future. But the Legislature is sending a clear message: they don't trust Floridians to decide what's best for our state. HB 1205 adds unnecessary hurdles that make grassroots organizing for direct democracy more difficult and expensive.
Unless stopped by the courts, as of July 1st, Floridians who want to collect more than 25 petitions (other than their own and immediate family members) will have to register with the state.
That's why it's important to act now. If you care about expanding access to Medicaid, securing a right to clean water, or any other citizen-led amendment that is working to get on the ballot: contact the campaign now and see how you can help collect petitions before the rules change on July 1st.
Thank you for standing up for our democracy,
Amy Keith, Executive Director
and the team at Common Cause Florida
