Pamela,
Congress knows a lot more than we do. They have top secret information on everything from foreign affairs to domestic infrastructure updates. And they might have access to top secret information on the stock market.
Recently, Trump announced a reversal on his incredibly unpopular tariffs, which caused the stock market to soar. Interestingly, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene bought as much as $300,000 worth of stocks before the announcement. That makes us wonder: Did she have insider information?
It's Congress' job to rein in Wall Street, not invest in it. We can do something about it. Demand your congressperson to pass the Bipartisan Restoring Faith in Government Act and ban congressional stock trading now.
The Bipartisan Restoring Faith in Government Act will prohibit members of Congress, their spouses, and dependents from owning or trading individual stocks. This has broad appeal with both Democrats and Republicans agreeing to sign it, with Rep. Mike Johnson stating publicly he supports banning stock trading in Congress. Even Trump has claimed he would absolutely sign this bill into law.
Congress gets access to incredible amounts of data and other sensitive information about corporations that you and I don't have. And it seems like they're using this to their advantage to become even richer. Congress should be working for us, not with the goal to become multimillionaires.
It's time to hold all the people who said they support this ban accountable. Tell them it's time to pass the Bipartisan Restoring Faith in Government Act to ban congressional stock trading once and for all.
In solidarity,
Mike Phelan
