Tell your state senator: Lower prescription drug costs NOW!
Dear Maryland MoveOn member,
We can make prescription drug costs more affordable this year—but we have to act now. State Senators Dawn Gile and Brian Feldman have introduced a bill that, if passed, would allow the Maryland Prescription Drug Affordability Board (PDAB) to set upper payment limits for expensive prescription drugs. This legislation would be a huge step forward to making high-cost drugs more affordable for ALL Marylanders. But we need you to help make it a priority this session.
Like the rest of the country, people in Maryland are struggling to afford the prescription drugs they desperately need; meanwhile, drug companies rake in the profits—a reality that hopefully the PDAB could help address. But as it stands, the PDAB is limited to addressing costs for only state and local government entities. It is critical that Maryland's PDAB is given this authority for everyone, because drugs don't work if people can't afford them.
People should not have to skip medications—or forgo them altogether—due to cost.
We are all hurt by the high cost of prescription drugs, whether at the pharmacy counter, through our insurance premiums, or through government spending of our taxpayer dollars. At a time when 1 in 3 Marylanders reports having skipped a dose or rationed medication because of affordability, legislators need to hear from their constituents that we are watching and expect them to take action.1
PDAP is specifically examining the cost of expensive medications for "type 2 diabetes, allergic diseases, chronic kidney disease, heart failure and Crohn's disease."2 This month alone, more than 800 medications had an average price increase of 4.5%—with some reporting price hikes of nearly 10%.3 The price of Dupixent, one of the prescriptions PDAP is investigating, had a whopping $3,800 increase in cost.4 This price gouging is costing us our health, and it's time for it to end.
Thanks for all you do.
