Dear MoveOn member,
We've been warned. Donald Trump has made crystal clear his plans for a second term—and they're absolutely terrifying.
He's signaled that he won't accept the results of the 2024 election if he loses. Since announcing his candidacy, he has cast doubt on the fairness of the 2024 election on average once a day (according to an analysis by The New York Times).1 "If everything's honest, I'll gladly accept the results," Trump said. "If it's not, you have to fight for the rights of the country."2
Trump has also said he plans to invoke the Insurrection Act on his first day in office.3 The act empowers a president to "take such measures as he considers necessary" to suppress "any insurrection, domestic violence, unlawful combination, or conspiracy."4 To Trump, that means sending the military into cities across the country to shut down peaceful protests and quash any resistance to his hateful and dangerous vision for our nation.
And he's signaled that, if elected, he'll use the Justice Department against his "enemies." In one post about special counsel Jack Smith's investigation, Trump warned there will be "repercussions far greater than anything that Biden or his Thugs could understand" and that if the investigations continue, it would open a "Pandora's Box" of retribution.5 In another, Trump threatened that his federal indictments are "setting a BAD precedent for yourself, Joe. The same can happen to you."6
I know so many Americans—maybe including you—are exhausted after resisting Trump for nearly a decade. But we can't give up. Trump and his MAGA billionaire backers want nothing more than for us to give up the fight.
But I say we keep fighting. My friends at MoveOn have a smart, ambitious, and inspiring plan to use grassroots people power to defeat Trump and MAGA this November. Just like we did in 2020. But they need our help to power the fight.
Back in 2020, MoveOn piloted a program called "vote tripling," an innovative voter outreach tactic that engaged individuals to reach out to three friends or family members to help them make a plan to vote and hold them accountable for getting to the polls. Data showed that a program like this was five times more effective than traditional outreach like phone-banking.
They refined the program in 2022 and focused on what they call "surge voters," those people who voted for the first time in 2018 or 2020 and who are likely to make the difference between winning and losing in most battleground states. In the end, their data showed that more than 50,000 voters cast votes who otherwise would not have turned out. That's HUGE.
And now they are taking that program to the next level, combining their vote-tripling program with a massive, multitiered voter outreach plan to get to voters early and keep them engaged all the way through Election Day.
It's a smart, strategic, data-driven campaign—exactly what I would expect from MoveOn. But it's been a rough year for fundraising at progressive organizations, which means that they have less funding than they anticipated and need to quickly catch up to ensure that the MAGA movement can't steamroll its way back to power.
