Pamela - One thing you may know about my story is that I am a refugee. When I was just a young child, my family was forced to escape civil war in Somalia and take sanctuary in a Kenyan refugee camp for four years. We didn't always have food, or running water. But we did always hold out hope that one day, we would be able to get out of that camp and start a new life in the United States. At the time, I never could have imagined that someday, I would run for office in a new country, nevermind become the first African-born member of Congress, or that tens of thousands of people would stand with me along the way. When I got to Washington, my colleagues and the political establishment told me that I was destined to fail. They said a Somali, Muslim, Hijab-wearing, Black progressive woman couldn't enact change in an institution with rules not created for us. They said that I would fail, and that two years later we'd run again and lose. But we did not back down. We fought hard for our ideas. We forced climate action to the top of the agenda. We made justice our priority. Then we ran again, and won. And once more after that, for good measure. But the truth is, our work is very far from over. The insiders and special interests who never wanted me in Congress are going to come back with more money and resources than ever before to try to take me down in 2024. So I am asking you to stand with me and our movement today. Will you add your name to personally endorse our re-election campaign today? Building this movement takes all of us. When I was first elected to Congress in 2018, our ideas were called radical: 🏥 Medicare for All 🌅 A Green New Deal 📈 Raising the Minimum Wage 🎓 Canceling Student Loans ❌ Banning Assault Weapons Together, our progressive movement made these ideas mainstream. We demanded an economy that works for the many, not the few. All of us — and especially young people — deserve a country that lives up to her promise of justice for all. There's no doubt that these ideas have put a constant target on me from Republicans and their corporate allies. The DC insiders and special interests that thrive on the status quo have come after me nonstop. Every two years, they recruit another challenger who will fall in line with their agenda, and their super PACs pump my district full of dark money to try to silence all of us. They are already preparing to do it again in 2024. But I didn't come to Congress to be silent. I came to Congress to be a voice for you. For working families. For little girls like me. And for those who have felt ignored or silenced for too long. Today, I need you to add your voice to mine as we prepare for the fights ahead. What do you say? Please use this link and add your name to personally endorse our re-election for Congress today. I need as many people as possible to stand with me in this campaign. It may seem like a small and simple action, but it speaks volumes about our collective power. Thank you for signing on today. In solidarity, Ilhan Omar |
