| Pamela, Republicans have a new economic plan: Work people from the cradle to the grave. While Republican presidential candidates trip over themselves to support increasing the retirement age, Republican governors are rolling back protections to prevent child labor. Why? Because child labor is a way to pay even less than the criminally low federal minimum wage. Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds just signed a bill that would allow kids into ultra-dangerous meatpacking facilities, high-volume Pepsi bottling plants, and building demolition and construction sites. SIGN NOW: Become a grassroots co-sponsor of the Stop Child Labor Act! STOP CHILD LABOR The Department of Labor has already identified provisions in the Iowa law that conflict with federal child labor laws. Corporate groups like the National Restaurant Association, the Chamber of Commerce, and the Koch-funded Americans for Prosperity have already spent millions in the hope that DoL will look the other way. We need to keep up the pressure and insist that children are protected from corporate greed! Kids should be able to be kids, and shouldn't have to work six-hour days on top of going to school. And if their families need the money, we need to raise the minimum wage and make sure that every job is a living wage, and no one needs to send their middle-schooler to a demolition site to put food on the table. Sign now: Protect kids from corporate greed! Thanks, Mike Phelan Progress America |
