Friend: This International Women’s Day, we’re honoring our fearless founder, Eglantyne Jebb, who fought tirelessly for the rights of children in a time when women in her native England couldn’t even vote.
Eglantyne was bold, unapologetic and courageous. Her words and actions continue to inspire every aspect of our work today, and we think she’d be incredibly proud of everything supporters like you have helped accomplish in the century since she spoke these words. Together, alongside girls like Zaynab,* Sara* and Iryna,* we’re achieving the impossible and bringing Eglantyne’s vision for a better world to life.
16-year-old Zaynab boldly fights for her rights. Zaynab was inspired to advocate against child marriage after her friend died in childbirth soon after getting married. Now, she is a member of the Borno State Children’s Parliament and a Girl Champion for Save the Children Nigeria, where she raises awareness about the challenges facing girls in her community.
15-year-old Sara unapologetically advocates for our planet’s future. She lives in a refugee camp in Gaza, where climate change threatens the survival of crops and the availability of clean water. After taking part in empowerment sessions run by a Save the Children partner, Sara joined a hearing for our Generation Hope campaign where she spoke about the importance of creating green spaces in refugee camps.
11-year-old Iryna finds courage through art to overcome the trauma of war. Iryna had trouble adjusting to her new surroundings in Poltava, Ukraine, after the war forced her and her mother to flee their home. An art therapy workshop at a Save the Children-supported community center gives her a creative outlet and the courage to talk about her feelings.
Today, on International Women’s Day, we hope that girls just like Zaynab, Sara and Iryna grow up to be strong and influential women like Eglantyne Jebb. Thank you for everything you do to help children around the world overcome hardships and build the brighter futures they and their peers deserve.
