Pamela - In 2012, my son Jordan was shot and killed by a man who claimed his music was too loud. I became an activist the day my son was murdered. I spent the next six years fighting tirelessly as an activist — demanding our elected leaders do something to end the gun violence epidemic. But Republicans in Congress refused to act. They would not pass legislation to keep our communities safe. So I decided to run for office as a mom on a mission — not simply to talk about change — but to get it done. I stepped up to run for office and beat one of the strongest Trump supporters in Congress - backed by NRA dark money - becoming the first Black woman ever to hold this seat. Now in honor of my son Jordan and everyone we've lost to gun violence, we just reintroduced H.R. 8, the universal background checks bill. Add your name to become a citizen co-sponsor of our universal background checks bill and demand Congress act now to pass this important legislation. Gun violence is a crisis that demands urgent action. We know there are commonsense laws that we could pass today that would help end our country's gun violence epidemic. We could start saving lives immediately. Universal background checks are at the top of that list. Every day, families across America worry about their children's safety, and time and again, these parents and kids watch as their elected leaders have failed to take action in the wake of another tragedy. The truth is too many in Congress and the media have become numb to this crisis. We live expecting more carnage, and when the time comes, we hear thoughts and prayers but never action or policy change. With every gun death, the blood soaks further and further into Congress' hands. Our legislation is supported by more than 90% of Americans. It is only in Congress that there's such opposition to this commonsense solution. But I remain hopeful that our time has come. Our movement is now far more powerful than the gun lobby, and there is no doubt in my mind that, if a vote is called, a majority of members in both chambers would vote to pass this bill. President Biden has made clear that gun safety measures are a priority. So we need everyone in this movement to put pressure on Congress to act. Will you add your name as a citizen co-sponsor of H.R. 8 to demand Congress pass universal background checks? I cannot do this alone. It will take everyone in our movement stepping up to put pressure on my colleagues to act. Our laws have failed too many of our children, including my son Jordan. This is our chance to honor their legacy. Thank you in advance for being part of this fight. My best, Lucy Lucy McBath Jordan's mom U.S. Representative, GA-06 |
