Friends -
In just a minute I am going to ask you to make a contribution to our campaign for president before the upcoming end-of-month fundraising deadline. But first let me explain why this one in particular is so important.
A few days ago, Joe Biden's campaign signaled to wealthy donors that it would accept the help of a super PAC.
When I talk about the corruption of the American political system, what it gets down to is that a very small number of people, many millionaires and billionaires, can spend as much money as they want to elect candidates who represent the wealthy and the powerful.
That is not what our democracy should be about. But that is what we must now face in this election.
I don't need a super PAC. I am not going to be controlled by a handful of wealthy people. I will be controlled by the working people of this country.
And that is why I must ask you now:
I am extremely proud that together we have revolutionized political campaign financing in America. For a very long time, politics in America was about candidates going out to the homes of wealthy people that have 50 millionaires in a room, and then leaving that room with hundreds of thousands of dollars.
We have turned that system upside down. Together our campaign — thanks to working class donors — has out-raised every other person running for the Democratic nomination.
The traditional donor class is not happy, because they no longer control the system. They're upset that we have over 1 million Americans who have made contributions to our campaign. Our donors are teachers and workers at Walmart and Amazon. They are people that make twelve or thirteen bucks an hour.
The average contribution to our campaign is just $19. I am humbled by that support, because I believe that the way we are running our campaign is the right way to run for president.
But now we are facing not just a billionaire class that doesn't want us to succeed, but a super PAC as well.
That is why I must ask for your financial support for our campaign again.
Thank you for all you do.
In solidarity,
Bernie Sanders
