Creating a better future for children in rural America

In the United States, child poverty is more prevalent in rural areas than in big cities.  More than 22% of rural kids are living in poverty compared to 17% of children in non-rural communities. They have less access to nutrition during the school day, fewer educational resources and fewer opportunities to play and develop their social skills. Save the Children is working to close that gap and give kids in rural America the best chance at a bright future. Through early childhood, afterschool and summer programs, we’re providing children with the support they need to thrive in life. Take a moment to see the many ways we’re tackling child poverty in rural America>>   This summer, our teams visited rural communities in Washington state to distribute books and resources kids need to succeed. Our team members cheered on young students at a graduation party for participants in the Early Steps to School Success Home Visiting program (Kindergarten Readiness).    One of the most memorable moments was seeing the joy on children’s faces as we celebrated their achievements. 3-year-old Sophie’s eyes lit up with excitement as her mother put her graduation cap on her head. She had just reached a major milestone by graduating from her early childhood program.    Friend, in collaboration with parents, educators, local partners and compassionate people like you, we’re helping thousands of kids like Sophie unlock their full potential.  We’re ensuring they have the reading and math skills, proper nutrition and emotional support they need during early development. With support from people like you, young children can excel in the classroom and be on track to lead successful careers.  Together, we can break the cycle of poverty and shape a brighter future for kids in rural areas.
