A massive erasure of fair representation for people of color

Here's what can happen at the state level if the Supreme Court guts Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act

Pamela, our latest report exposes a new dimension of the threat posed by a pending Supreme Court decision.

The right-wing justices seem likely to gut Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act, our central safeguard against racially discriminatory redistricting.

We'd already found that such a ruling could secure 19 new safe Republican seats in the U.S. House. Enough to cement long-term control even if Democrats win the popular vote.

But the damage wouldn't end there.

Our new report, co-released this week with Black Voters Matter Fund, details the additional, sweeping consequences at the state legislative level. As a result of the ruling, lawmakers could:

  • Eliminate approximately 191 state legislative seats currently held by Democrats across 10 Southern states — the vast majority of these are Black representatives for majority-minority districts
  • Decimate fair representation and minority political power at the state level
  • Lock in GOP supermajorities for a generation
  • Block progress on healthcare, civil rights, education, criminal justice reform, and more

This would represent a massive erasure of fair representation for people of color, silencing millions of voices and undoing the gains in political power that communities of color fought for and built over generations.

Click here to read the report, and share it with five people you know. Tell them what's at stake: core American principles of fair representation and protecting people from discrimination.

We're raising the alarm with this new report right now because the window to protect Black and Latino political power and fair representation is closing.

The fight ahead requires immediate action, sustained organizing, and strategic investment.

As soon as the Supreme Court releases a decision gutting Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act (if they do), state lawmakers will likely move quickly to draw new maps.

But with this team's support, we'll more than match their urgency. Our pro-democracy movement will:

  • Fight back against any proposed racially discriminatory maps
  • Work with partners to redraw fair maps wherever possible to offset map rigging
  • Advocate for pro-democracy reforms at the state and federal level to ensure fair representation
  • Push Congress to investigate and expose unfair maps that silence minority voices
  • Demand transparency and accountability from the Supreme Court

Through grassroots mobilization, public education, coalition building, and public pressure, we can keep up the fight for fair representation, and for our democracy.

And we must.
