Pamela, you won't believe this:
First, Donald Trump set off a nationwide gerrymandering frenzy when he ordered Texas Republicans to redraw their map to maximize his party's advantage.
Then, other states followed suit – part of MAGA's plan to rig the 2026 midterms and ensure they can never be removed from power.
Now, Trump's Department of Justice is suing the state of California – singling out the map voters just approved this month as the only one deserving legal pushback.
Apparently, when it comes to partisan gerrymandering, Trump Republicans can dish it out but can't take it.
They're seemingly fine with Texas, which hijacked a special legislative session meant for disaster relief to rush through their maps.
They've got no issues with North Carolina, where the legislature is laser-targeting a majority-Black district to silence the people who live there.
But California – the only state so far to follow Common Cause's fairness criteria of letting the public weigh in and ensuring racial equity, among others – is the one that gets the federal government's attention.
We're still evaluating potential legal responses, but this much is clear, Pamela: even for the Trump Administration, this is a new low of hypocrisy.
Remember, California's new maps – which we did not endorse or oppose – were a direct response to Texas and other states rigging their districts on the White House's explicit orders!
So, Trump's team is totally fine with cheating… as long as it's to Republicans' advantage. But as soon as states like California try to counterbalance them, then suddenly it's a national emergency.
We're not falling for it, Pamela, and with your help, neither will the American people.
Common Cause is your advocate for fair representation and fair maps in all 50 states. That's why we put out a single set of fairness criteria for mid-decade redraws – which California passed and Texas failed.
Now, as other states like Florida, Virginia, and Illinois consider following suit, while others like Indiana are changing course after Common Cause members in the state spoke out, we're on the front lines of this fight.
Our advocacy teams are in the legislature and in court advocating for the people – so politicians can't just do as they please and rob voters like us of our rightful voices.
This is the first major battle of the 2026 midterms – so if you're with Common Cause and ready to do what it takes to ensure they are free and fair, help power our work with a contribution today >>
