Pamela, we have great news to share! On Wednesday, Massachusetts lawmakers overwhelmingly voted to RESCIND the state's Article V calls. Common Cause Massachusetts has spent years advocating for exactly this – educating voters about this secretive threat to our constitutional rights and organizing people across the state and making sure their representatives heard from them. Thanks to their work, we now have 17 states with no calls to rewrite the Constitution on the books, which is one below the required threshold for a convention. Dear Pamela, What if you woke up tomorrow morning and learned that, overnight, there was a brand-new Constitution that banned abortion in all 50 states? Ended Medicare and Social Security? Or made peaceful protest a felony? The fact is: well-funded right-wing groups are already working in the shadows to make this nightmare scenario a reality. And given how unpopular these extreme policies are with voters – the far right has increasingly realized that this is the best path to getting their way. I'm talking about Article V – a plot that would allow unelected, unaccountable delegates to radically reshape our Constitution. They've spent years working in secret to enact a disturbing agenda. Shredding First Amendment protections. Gutting environmental regulations. Rolling back civil rights advances. And enshrining far-right economics as permanent fiscal policy – gutting Medicare, Medicaid, and other safety-net programs. Many constitutional experts are sounding the alarm bells: with extremists already threatening to upend our checks and balances, Article V is more likely to happen than ever before. Even worse, this threat to our democracy is being cooked up behind closed doors and out of the public eye. Pamela, I'm not telling you this to add to your despair or imply that all hope is lost. Here at Common Cause, we have a track record of winning the state-by-state fights against Article V. With your help, we've stopped nearly 150 new calls for a convention each year in states across the country. And we're playing offense too! We've successfully rescinded existing convention calls in New Jersey, Illinois, Colorado, New Hampshire, Delaware, New Mexico, Maryland, and Nevada – meaning that if Common Cause hadn't acted, we'd be one or two states from going off the Article V cliff! But I don't need to tell you that the right-wing extremists and billionaire donors behind this effort are feeling more emboldened than ever right now.
