If ICE can run these ads, we can too

We're organizing to pressure Spotify to cancel their contract with ICE and revise their policies to prevent this from happening again.

Dear MoveOn member, Tens of millions of people across the country use Spotify every day to listen to music or podcasts—and now they're being inundated with MAGA propaganda urging them to join Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and "fulfill your mission to protect America."1 Spotify has agreed to run these recruitment ads for the Department of Homeland Security, even as ICE agents conduct what one lawsuit describes as "brazen, midday kidnappings" that violate the Constitution.2 The ads use dehumanizing language about immigrants, while offering $50,000 signing bonuses to join an agency that's terrorizing communities and kidnapping people without due process. Already, nearly 40,000 MoveOn members have called on Spotify to pull down the ads. But Spotify has doubled down and refused to take down the odious ads.3 Well, if ICE can run ads, MoveOn can too. We're producing a 30-second ad to run on Spotify targeting listeners in the cities hardest hit by ICE raids. Spotify claims ICE's ads don't violate their advertising policy, even though their policy explicitly prohibits content that "promotes stereotypes or negatively portrays or attacks an individual or group"—like immigrants.4 Americans are growing more and more concerned over the cruel, chaotic, and callous actions taken by ICE's masked agents. That's why Spotify users are canceling their subscriptions. Artists like the band Thursday are speaking out, calling on Spotify to remove the ads and asking others to join them.5 But Spotify is betting they can ride out the opposition and pocket the profits from these recruitment ads. This is exactly the kind of fight MoveOn was built for. We're organizing to pressure Spotify to cancel their contract with ICE and revise their policies to prevent this from happening again. It's one piece of a much larger battle. The Trump administration's attacks on immigrant communities, democratic institutions, and basic human rights are intensifying every day. ICE raids are escalating. Constitutional protections are being ignored. And corporations like Spotify are choosing to profit from it rather than stand up against it. We need to let Spotify listeners in cities including Los Angeles, San Francisco, Miami, Houston, D.C., Chicago, Atlanta, and Portland, Oregon, know just how horrible these ICE ads are and demand that the platform stop aiding and abetting the Trump administration.
