[1] And soon after, FCC Chairman Brendan Carr publicly amplified the attack, turning Trump's tirade into another unmistakable show of official pressure. [2] Just like when ABC suspended Jimmy Kimmel – then reinstated him after you spoke out – NBC's parent company, Comcast, is expected to bid on a multi-billion dollar merger deal that requires Trump and his FCC's approval. [3] You can see the implicit deal on offer here: silence the Trump critics on your network, and we'll rubber stamp your deal. Trump wins one less critic on the airwaves, and Comcast's shareholders get richer. These kinds of actions are what lands a country in totalitarianism, where nobody is allowed to disagree with the people in charge. NBC has a choice – but they'll only pick the side of courage, transparency, and democracy if they know customers like you are demanding it. [4] Then Trump boasted that "Jimmy Kimmel is next" [5] – and FCC Chairman Brendan Carr warned ABC they could "do it the easy way or the hard way." [6] Soon after, ABC and Disney caved and pulled Kimmel off the air – only to backtrack after massive pressure from activists like you. [7] And now, Trump is once again demanding NBC fire Seth Meyers, with Chairman Carr backing him up. [8] Let's be clear: these are comedians, not reporters. But the networks they work for also report the news to millions of people across the country. So how are we supposed to trust media giants to report that news fairly when their parent companies seem willing to bend to the president any chance they get? The First Amendment doesn't say "freedom of speech – unless it hurts the president's feelings." It guarantees our right to speak out, to criticize those in power, and to hold leaders accountable.
