Dear Andra, As you are one of MoveOn's dedicated donors, we wanted to take this opportunity to share with you some highlights of MoveOn's work over the past month—and what a month it has been! Donald Trump spent the month of September expanding his attacks on our rights and our democracy—but we were ready to meet those attacks with peaceful, grassroots resistance. STANDING UP FOR THE FIRST AMENDMENT After the murder of Charlie Kirk, Trump and his administration shamelessly used the tragedy as justification for a crackdown on the freedom of speech, including directly threatening Disney and ABC to pull Jimmy Kimmel off the air. When ABC bowed to those demands, MoveOn members immediately sprang into action. Within hours of the announcement that Kimmel's show had been indefinitely suspended, MoveOn members by the thousands were signing a petition demanding he be reinstated. Within just three days, over 150,000 people had signed the petition, with that number eventually growing to exceed 230,000 signatures! MoveOn also mobilized immediately to provide support for protests in front of the headquarters for ABC and Disney in Los Angeles, sending a mobile billboard truck to drive between Disney's headquarters and the theater where "Jimmy Kimmel Live" is taped. Take a look at the billboard in action! Less than a week after the petition went viral, and with activism from many people across the country, Disney announced that they were putting Kimmel back on the air! This was a great victory, but our work is not done. Trump's FCC chairman, Brendan Carr, openly threatened to rescind the broadcast license of a television network if they do not do Trump's bidding, an act so blatantly illegal and corrupt that it cannot be swept under the rug. MoveOn is continuing our work to defend the First Amendment and stop the Trump administration's mafia-style threats by running a campaign demanding that Carr be fired, and continuing to pressure other networks and private businesses to stand up for our rights. CALLING ON DEMOCRATS TO PROTECT OUR HEALTH CARE As the federal government funding deadline approached, it became clear that Republicans in Congress had no intention of negotiating with Democrats and fully intended to pass a funding bill that would ensure that more than 20 million Americans' health insurance premiums skyrocketed, that dozens of rural hospitals closed, and that more than 10 million people lost their health care altogether. Which is why we spent the month calling on Democrats to use every lever of power they have—including shutting down the government—to protect our health care and stop Trump's lawlessness. And when the clock struck midnight on September 30, the overwhelming majority of Democrats stood strong and refused to vote for a spending bill that would leave tens of millions of people in the lurch. But the fight is far from over. Because Trump and the Republicans know how unpopular their attacks on health care are with people from both parties, they are desperately trying to change the narrative and lie about the shutdown in an effort to turn the public against Democrats. Which is why MoveOn is going all in to push back against their misinformation with huge campaigns on social media, in-person rallies, and more, to make sure people across the country know exactly who is behind the shutdown and why it is really happening. But that's not all. We are also continuing to call on Democrats to hold the line by partnering with our allies on a huge campaign to drive 500,000 calls to Congress! By flooding their phone lines with constituent voices calling on them to stand up for our rights, we know they will be forced to listen. REMINDING TRUMP THAT AMERICA HAS NO KINGS Back in June, we drowned out Trump's wannabe military parade by helping to pull off one of the largest days of action in U.S. history, with over 5 million people taking to the streets in peaceful protest. Throughout September, MoveOn work around the clock with allies to prepare for the second No Kings day of action, October 18—a day we hope will be the BIGGEST day of nonviolent action in history! Throughout the month we were working with our partners to recruit volunteers, prepare hosts of events in big cities and small towns, and promote the events to millions and millions of people.
