Pamela,
We all love the convenience of DoorDash. The ability to have your favorite meal or missing ingredient delivered right to your door is priceless.
But right now, DoorDash is in the process of lobbying our rights away. In July, a House committee passed the "Modern Worker Empowerment Act" (H.R. 1319), which would change the classification criteria used to determine if a worker is an employee or contractor.
Well, what does that mean if this bill is passed? It means employers would have free reign to reclassify large swaths of their workforce from employees to contractors, which would strip those workers of their employer-provided benefits, workplace protections, and the right to collectively bargain.
And DoorDash is in favor of this bill. Its support of this bill shows that this company is willing to go after all of its workers rights as long as it boosts the company's bottom line. Congress still hasn't passed this bill, so please tell DoorDash's CEO to stop lobbying for H.R. 1319?
This bill does the opposite of empowering workers; it strips them of their rights. And gig workers wouldn't be the only ones impacted if this bill passed. Teachers, nurses, truck drivers, and millions of other workers who right now, have control over the details of their work and use professional judgement would be affected by this bill.
People should have the ability to choose when, how and where to work, and large corporations like DoorDash want to squash that. This will lead to employee shortages across all industries, including delivery services.
We found out DoorDash's CEO, Tony Xu, actually reads his emails. That's why we're asking you to reach out to him today to share your outrage at his company supporting anti-worker legislation. Tell Mr. Xu to stop lobbying for H.R. 1319.
In solidarity,
Mike Phelan
