Dear MoveOn member, If you needed a reminder that hope is not lost in our country and that there's power in collective action, we got it yesterday when Disney reinstated Jimmy Kimmel's show. Disney and ABC faced an avalanche of criticism and protest, including from hundreds of thousands of MoveOn members, for "indefinitely" suspending Kimmel's show last week after Trump's chair of the Federal Communications Commission threatened Disney's license over comments Kimmel made in the aftermath of Charlie Kirk's murder.1 Yesterday, in a tremendous victory for the freedom of speech and for solidarity, Disney announced that "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" will return to the air tonight!2 There are similarities to what happened in Chicago early this month, when Trump abruptly chose not to send National Guard troops to occupy Chicago after Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, Mayor Brandon Johnson, and organizations across Chicago locked arms, spoke out, and organized to protect their city.3 When we unite and fight back with clarity, fortitude, and tenacity, we can—and will—stop the Trump administration's authoritarian overreaches. When JD Vance and Stephen Miller announced last week an aggressive crackdown on "the left," MoveOn, the largest progressive grassroots organization in the country, quickly began mobilizing both internally with our staff and across the progressive movement to ensure that all of us would be as prepared as possible.4 Miller promised to use the full force of the federal government to "destroy" progressive nonprofit organizations and foundations.5 Not on our watch, Andra. According to media reports, the Trump administration is considering using RICO, the law often used to prosecute organized crime, against progressive groups, designating groups as domestic terrorist organizations and/or attempting to revoke their nonprofit status.6 Each of these approaches, regardless of how frivolous the cases are, could tie organizations in legal and financial knots for years. Not on our watch, Andra. The way we beat back authoritarianism is by locking arms, speaking out, and not giving up. MoveOn will be ready, whether the Trump administration comes after us or our allies. These victories didn't happen by accident—they happened because organizations like MoveOn had the resources to mobilize hundreds of thousands of members quickly and effectively. But Miller's promise to "destroy" progressive organizations means we need to be stronger than ever. The battles ahead could be expensive and prolonged.
