Pamela: Troubling New York Times reports indicate that the Trump administration is secretly — and likely unlawfully — planning to use military force in Mexico and elsewhere in Latin America. It's part of a continued misguided effort to "defeat" drug trafficking and address the fentanyl crisis, real problems with no military solution.[1]
Expanding the failed "war on drugs" with reckless, unlawful military action won't stop the flow of fentanyl. What will Trump's dangerous idea do? Trigger economic crises, erode civil liberties, and escalate violence on both sides of the border.
The best time to stop a war is before it starts, Pamela. That's why we, along with everyone from experts at conservative think tanks to progressive union leaders, have been sounding the alarm and preparing for a scenario like this for months.
We can't do it alone. Pushing Trump off his path toward military action requires forceful, clear-headed leadership from our elected officials — and your voice today can help push them to speak out.
Tell Congress: Stop Trump from launching a war in Mexico and other Latin American countries!
| ACT NOW |
If you've been here for a while, you may remember that we've been pushing against this since Trump first made a disastrous promise to "wage war" on cartels during last year's presidential campaign.
Because we know that more bombs and bullets won't build safety or bring families struggling in the face of the fentanyl crisis relief and support. Our partner organization, the Win Without War Education Fund, organized a tabletop exercise (TTX) earlier this year that played through the consequences of this very scenario. The results? Bombing cartels in Mexico would be ineffective at best, and disastrous at worst.
The TTX found U.S. military action in Mexico, and the resulting fallout between the Mexican and U.S. governments wouldn't just fail at curbing fentanyl flows. Strikes would also intensify cartel violence and displacement in Mexico, hurt U.S. workers, and deepen attacks on civil liberties here at home.[2]
It's why we've been working with a nationwide network of parents of children struggling with addiction. With your support, we brought them to DC in May to tell lawmakers: We need healthcare, not warfare.
Unfortunately, this bad idea is still gaining steam as the Trump administration appears to be moving forward with plans to strike cartels directly.
Congress must push Trump's best laid plan off the rails — and your voice will help build the pressure for them to do just that.
Will you send a message to your elected officials today? NO wars in Mexico or Latin America.
The military- and violence-first approaches that Trump and others before him have sold us, like so many other failed U.S. interventions, do little to keep anyone safe. But, Pamela, we know a different world is possible. That's why we'll continue to advocate for the things that do: Life-saving health care, protecting human rights and civil liberties, cutting off the flow of U.S.-made guns to cartels, and preventing new wars.
Thank you for working for peace,
