Sign on to our letter demanding the immediate, permanent closure of Guantánamo

Our job, now and always, is to defend communities facing violence and injustice.

Win Without War

Pamela: Luis Alberto Castillo Rivera, a 23-year-old from Venezuela, came to the U.S. through the CBP One appointment system, a way for asylum-seekers to enter the country.[1] But when he arrived at the processing center, he was targeted for having tattoos, despite having no criminal record, and then deported to Guantánamo Bay.[2]

Torture, indefinite detention, and grave human rights abuses have defined the Guantánamo Bay Detention Center for more than two decades.

Trump's decision to revive the infamous detention facilities for migrant detention is cruel. It may even be illegal. And it is undoubtedly costly — with at least $21 million having already been spent by the Pentagon on deportation flights alone.[3]

It's unacceptable, Pamela, which is why Rep. Rashida Tlaib led 15 of her colleagues in the House of Representatives with a letter to the Trump administration demanding the immediate, permanent closure of Guantánamo — and today, we're asking you to add your name to the letter.

We've been vocal in the fight to close Guantánamo for years, so we need to amplify these calls to "Shut. It. Down." and make our demands impossible to ignore in this critical moment.

Will you sign today as a grassroots co-signer of the congressional letter demanding Trump immediately halt immigrant detention at Guantánamo Bay and permanently close its detention facilities?

ACT NOW

One of the most disastrous policies of the George W. Bush administration was opening the detention facility at Guantánamo Bay in 2002. Roughly 800 detainees have been held at the U.S. military prison over the past 23 years, 15 of whom remain.

Today, "Guantánamo" remains synonymous with unconstitutional abuse and injustice as Trump seeks to imprison 30,000 migrants at the base — which is already holding more than two dozen people from 26 countries as thousands more are vetted for a possible transfer.[4]

An immigrant prison on Guantánamo Bay won't make our country safer. It won't fix our immigration system. It will, however, deepen the suffering of people who are already fleeing violence, instability, and poverty.

Our job, now and always, is to defend communities facing violence and injustice. Today, that looks like joining the growing chorus of calls to immediately, permanently shut Guantánamo Bay down.

Sign on to join the letter demanding the closure of Guantánamo Bay and the end of immigrant detention at its notorious torture facilities.
