Pamela: Military strikes between the Israeli and Iranian governments have pushed an entire region to the precipice of a devastating war. Hundreds of people have already died. Now, families across the world sit terrified, unsure if they or their loved ones will be in harm's way.
This violent reality is abhorrent to people who believe in peace and justice like us, but that's not the only reason we're worried. Troubling reports indicate the Israeli government is urging the United States to enter the war and attack sites in Iran directly[1] — and if the U.S. government is dragged in deeper, things could all get even worse.
Israeli PM Netanyahu doesn't get to decide when the United States goes to war. But Trump appears to be letting Netanyahu call the shots while recklessly fanning the flames of this conflict — even though war with Iran is hugely unpopular across the country, including with his base.
But, Pamela, you have a key role to play in correcting the course. Today, as loud and influential hawks in the media and across DC champion these attacks and urge the U.S. government to intervene directly, we need to do what we do best: Turn up the pressure to stop a war.
| ACT NOW |
A U.S.-Iran war would be disastrous and wholly unnecessary. Military and diplomatic leaders have warned it could bring costs in both blood and resources greater than the wars with Iraq and Afghanistan combined. For people in the Middle East, including 50,000 U.S. troops currently stationed across at least 19 sites, the human suffering from continued violence would be immeasurable.
We have the narrowest window of time to stop this nightmare scenario before it gets even worse. The good news? We've been here before — and won.
In 2020, Trump took us closer than ever to the brink of war with Iran when he ordered the assassination of Qassem Soleimani, a senior Iranian military leader. Within days, we mobilized hundreds of thousands of people to sign petitions, make calls, and take to the streets to demand Congress pull us back from the brink of war.
That groundswell of activism — your actions — helped send Congress the message it needed to push Trump away from a devastating U.S.-Iran war five years ago.
Today, we've got to jumpstart a movement capable of doing it once more. Because while Trump 2.0 has even fewer guardrails and respect for the rule of law than Trump 1.0, this president still can't change the fact that we live in a democracy. Congress — the voices of the people — and not Trump or Netanyahu, should decide what happens next.
It is time to remind the president his powers have limits. Your voice is critical, and our outreach has to start immediately. This weekend, Five million people spoke out to say "No Kings." Now, let's join together to say: No war in Iran.
Thank you for working for peace,
The Win Without War team
