Pamela, it's another day, which means it's another opportunity for the Republican party to dismantle something that makes our country great. And today, their focus is the U.S. Department of Education. Trump signed an executive order to abolish the department and House Republicans recently introduced H.R. 899, a bill that would completely eliminate the Department of Education.
Public education is an investment in Americans; it's the great equalizer and helps us compete with countries like China and Russia. Republicans like to tell people to pull themselves up by their bootstraps, and education is one of those ways. But yet again Republicans don't practice what they preach. Instead, they want to eliminate public education, leaving states scrambling to make up the difference in funding, skyrocketing inequality, and making education a privilege for the wealthy, not a right for all.
This is just another example of taking away public goods to add more money to billionaires' pockets. And this is to the detriment of every single American.
We have an opportunity to stop this, [Firstname/friend]. Congress must hear us loud and clear: Vote against any attempt to abolish the Department of Education.
Since the CEO of the WWE took the reins of the department, Linda McMahon has fired nearly 50% of the workforce. And without the Department of Education, that means no more student loans, no protections for students with disabilities, and no oversight of education access. Right now, the department manages over $1 trillion in federal student aid, and if eliminated, it would leave millions in limbo and make college even more unaffordable than it already is.
Republicans want to dismantle the department so they can make their own rules. They want Republican-led states to gut public education funding, eliminate resources for students with disabilities, and roll back or slash protections entirely for LGBTQ+ students.
And if you think Republicans will stop at dismantling the Department of Education, you're wrong. Once they get their way here, they'll take their aim at Social Security, USPS and the Veterans' Affairs Department. This sets a bad precedent, and you can do something to prevent this. House Democrats are united – and they only need three Republicans – to block H.R. 899. That's why it's critical for you to tell Congress: Vote no on H.R. 899 to protect the Department of Education.
In solidarity,
Mike Phelan
