Hi Pamela,
Starting May 7, 2025, new federal rules require a REAL ID to board a domestic flight or enter certain federal buildings.
If you don't have the right ID, you could be turned away — but there's still time to check and update your identification if needed.
Many Floridians already have a REAL ID — but it's easy to double-check: if your driver license or Florida ID card has a gold star on the upper right-hand corner, you're all set. If not, you can use a valid passport or one of the other acceptable IDs to travel domestically.
If you need to update your identification, visit www.flhsmv.gov/locations to find a driver license service center or tax collector office near you. Before you go, be sure to review the "What to Bring" checklist so you have the necessary documents to prove your identity.
If cost is a concern, help is available. Some Floridians can get a State of Florida ID Card for free or at a very low cost:
If you have income at or below the federal poverty level
If you are experiencing homelessness
If you receive SNAP/EBT benefits
Veterans can obtain a Florida ID for just $1
Need extra help getting your ID? Our partners at VoteRiders offer free assistance in English and Spanish. Call or text 866-ID-2-VOTE (866-432-8683) or email helpline@voteriders.org to get started.
Important: Even if you don't have a REAL ID, you can still vote in Florida! The state accepts 12 different forms of identification for voting — so your right to cast a ballot is protected.
Pamela, don't wait. Check your ID status today and help spread the word to family and friends!
Together we can help our communities overcome barriers.
Thank you for all you do,
Franceska Edouard, Florida Organizer
