Pamela – a group chat should be used for sending memes and jokes back and forth, not planning a military strike. High level Trump officials used an unsecured commercial platform that they were explicitly warned against to plan a military strike. And guess what? No one has taken responsibility for this potentially fatal error.
This is a dangerous precedent that puts American intelligence agents in harm's way. It goes beyond incompetence: This is criminal recklessness. We must demand accountability and shouldn't stop until everyone responsible and involved in this dangerous national security breach is gone.
Add your name now to demand that every single Trump official involved in this Signal war chat – including people defending them – to be fired now.
We know about this war chat because of the accidental addition of The Atlantic's editor-in-chief, but what other chats are going on in this unsecure platform that we don't know about? The Trump administration is raiding our most sensitive data, so it's quite possible that there's a Signal chat floating around with our Social Security numbers. Or maybe there's a chat with our tax returns. There's no sense of what type of sensitive information is out there on the unsecure app.
The incompetence and lack of accountability is staggering, [Firstname/friend]. This just shows that Republicans are the party of "rules for thee, not for me." Because imagine if a Democrat did this; there would be calls for immediate resignations, firings, and investigations. But because this was done by Republicans, they're good to risk national security – and people's lives – just because they can.
Signal chats shouldn't have our most sensitive information and this potentially deadly mistake can't happen again. That's why it's time to demand that everyone involved in the Signal chat resign or be fired immediately.
Thank you,
Mike Phelan
